Junior Learning Community

Year 1

It has been another busy and exciting week of learning in our classroom! 

Literacy In Literacy, we have been focusing on the digraphs 'aw' (as in claw) and 'au' (as in August). Students have been practising reading and spelling words containing these letter combinations. We have also been learning how to add the suffix -ed to words to change them into the past tense. During Writing, we have been exploring persuasive texts. We have discussed the difference between facts and opinions and practised using convincing reasons and persuasive language to encourage our audience to agree with our point of view. 

Mathematics In Mathematics, we have begun our Skip Counting unit. The children have been "super skip counters" as they practise counting forwards and backwards in different intervals. They have also been identifying, extending and creating number patterns using skip counting strategies. 

Religion In Religion, we are learning more about the life of Jesus, beginning with his early years. We have been discussing how we can follow Jesus' example by showing kindness, compassion and love for our neighbours in our everyday lives. 

Geography We have continued our Geography unit, Our Land and Our Connections. This week, we explored some of Australia's most famous landmarks. Many students were excited to recognise these special places and shared stories of landmarks they have visited. We also completed a travel brochure where students selected an Australian state or territory and showcased a natural landmark, a human-made landmark, a place of cultural significance and a community place. They also explained which mode of transport would be the most suitable for travelling to their chosen destination. The students demonstrated excellent creativity and geographical knowledge in their brochures. 

YEAR 2

It was a pleasure chatting to all the parents with their children last week at 3-way Chats. Thank you to everyone that came along and had deep conversations with us about their child's learning. During the 3 way chats we discussed goals for the children to work towards in Semester 2.  We look forward to watching the children grow throughout the remainder of 2026. 

Religion: 

The students are currently learning about" Daily Life in Jesus' time". Students are exploring what daily life was like in Jesus’ time to better understand the world in which he lived. Through imagery, guided dialogue, and reflection, students are beginning to connect Jesus’ life to their own experiences. This week, we have role-played about making choices that reflects Jesus’ teaching in everyday situations. 

Numeracy: 

The students finished off their unit on Multiplication and Division with the assessment on Tuesday. It was a tricky unit with lots of new concepts to learn about dividing and multiplying.  The students did well.  

Today we have started our math unit on shape – we will be learning about parallel lines and polygons. The students will revise the names of 2D and 3D shapes and will be asked to recall their main properties.  

Literacy: 

In Literacy we have been reading the story of “The Day the Crayons Came Home” by Drew Daywalt. The children have enjoyed listening to what has happened to the crayons on their travels. And now we are working on our sentence writing skills, adding conjunctions to the sentences written about the crayon's adventures. 

During spelling time, we have been focusing on silent letters (words with digraphs - kn, wr and mb. We have also been learning new tricky words – decided, know, were.  The children enjoyed conversations about the homophones associated with silent letters like knight and night, or, right and write. 

Please continue to work on the tricky word lists that were sent home earlier in Term 3. The students will be tested on some of them next week. The importance of home reading was discussed at 3-Way Chats – please continue to support your child to read at home. 

Inquiry Learning - Geography: 

Next week we will finish up our geography unit of work called "Our Land and Our Connections." The students have enjoyed learning about our country and the continents in our world.  

Sport: 

During sport time in Term 3 the students have been practicing many of the events that they will compete in on Athletics Day.  Please encourage your child to try their personal best when training for this day.
