Year 5/6 Bulletin - Maths

Learning Intention: To identify and explain square numbers by using multiplication strategies and arrays.

 

Overview of the Lesson: This week, students have been exploring square numbers and developing their understanding of how they are created through repeated multiplication. Students learned that square numbers are made when a number is multiplied by itself and used arrays to visually represent the equal rows and columns that form square numbers. For example: 3 × 3 = 9, 4 × 4 = 16, 5 × 5 = 25

 

Students investigated how these multiplication facts create arrays, where the number of rows and columns are equal. Arrays provide a visual representation of square numbers and help students connect multiplication strategies with mathematical patterns.

 

Students used an anchor chart to support their thinking and followed a step-by-step process to solve square number equations. They practised identifying the repeated factor, representing the multiplication fact as an array, and calculating the total number of objects in the square arrangement. This helped students develop a deeper understanding of why square numbers have equal rows and columns.

 

Students were also introduced to indices, or powers as a shorter way to represent repeated multiplication. For example: 4 × 4 can be written as 4², 5 × 5 can be written as 5²

Continuing the Learning at Home:

Students can continue developing their understanding of square numbers by looking for examples in everyday life. Encourage your child to:

 

  • Practise identifying square numbers and explaining how they know.
  • Draw arrays to represent square numbers (eg. a 6 × 6 array represents 36).
  • Use the strategy from the anchor chart to solve square number equations.
  • Explore square numbers using multiplication and index notation.
  • Look for square patterns in the world around them, such as tiles, grids, or designs.
