This Week's Learning bulletin: MATHS
Our Mathematics program is aligned with the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM 2.0), with all learning experiences following our school Learning Model. Each lesson is carefully structured to support students as they develop new knowledge, practise skills with guidance, and apply their learning independently.
Number continues to be a major focus across all year levels. A strong understanding of number provides the foundation for success in Algebra, Measurement, Space, and Statistics. For this reason, students regularly engage in learning experiences that build both their mathematical skills and the strategies needed to solve problems confidently.
Every Maths lesson begins with a Fluency and Automaticity routine. This important part of the lesson develops students' automatic recall of key number facts, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. When these facts become automatic, students can think more efficiently, solve increasingly complex problems and apply their mathematical understanding across all areas of the curriculum.
Role of Anchor Charts and Checklists
You will also notice that anchor charts and checklists play an important role in our Learning Model. These tools make the learning explicit by helping students understand exactly what they are looking for, thinking about or doing to develop a new skill or strategy. They provide clear criteria that students can refer to throughout the lesson, encouraging independence, reflection and greater ownership of their learning.
Learning Portfolio and how it is linked to the Bulletin
As your child's Learning Portfolio comes home, we encourage you to take the opportunity to discuss the learning experience they have included. Please sign the work sample to acknowledge that it has been shared and use the accompanying information to explore how you can continue to support the development of these skills at home.
