Learning Intention: 

To use repeated addition to count equal groups.

 

Learning Experience Overview:

In maths, we have been exploring repeated addition through worded problems involving equal groups. As a class, we worked together to identify the important information in each problem, using clue words such as each, every, and equal groups. The teacher modelled how to find the key information and think about two important questions: How many groups are there? and How many items are in each group? Students shared their ideas and reasoning as we worked together to draw pictures to represent the problem and write the matching repeated addition equation. We referred to our anchor chart throughout the lesson to help us recognise equal groups and understand how repeated addition can be used to find the total.

What students were asked to do:

Students then completed a task sheet containing worded problems. They needed to identify the key information in the question and use pictures and repeated addition to show their thinking and find the total.

 

 

 

 

 

What you can do now to continue the learning at home from this experience:

 

  • Find equal groups around your home (e.g. pairs of socks, plates, toys, fruit).
  • Draw the groups and write a repeated addition number sentence.
  • Create your own shop orders using objects at home.
  • Make equal groups and explain:
    • How many groups?
    • How many in each group?
    • What is the total?
  • Create a maths story problem using equal groups.
