A Snapshot into Maths
Learning Experience Overview:
In Maths, we have been exploring patterns. Students have been learning to identify the difference between repeating patterns and growing patterns. We discussed the different types of repeating patterns (such as AB, AAB, ABB and ABC) and how growing patterns change by increasing each time.
What students were asked to do:
Students used a variety of classroom materials to create their own pattern. They had to identify whether their pattern was a repeating pattern or a growing pattern and explained how they knew. Students were encouraged to describe the rule of their pattern and continue it correctly.
What you can do now to continue the learning at home from this experience:
- Your child will bring home a photo of the pattern they created. Discuss with them whether it is a repeating or growing pattern and what the rule is.
- Look for patterns together in everyday life, such as on clothing, in songs or in nature.
- Create repeating and growing patterns using household objects such as toys, blocks, fruit, leaves or spoons.
- Challenge your child to continue a pattern you have started or create one for you to solve.
