A Spotlight on Learning

A Spotlight on Learning in the FLC on Heights Campus

It has been a busy and exciting start to Term 2 in the Foundation Learning Centre. Students have been engaged in a range of wonderful learning experiences and were involved in special events such as the Hercules play, performing a song for Reconciliation Week, the Junior Cross Country and the Mother’s Day morning tea.

The FLC students celebrated Mother’s Day by inviting their mums and special friends to school for a morning tea. There were many enjoyable activities, including jewellery making, biscuit decorating and crown making. Students proudly presented handmade gifts to their mums, helping them feel very special. Families especially enjoyed hearing the children sing the song “You Are My Sunshine.”

Phonics and Reading lessons continue to be an exciting part of learning in the FLC, as students are beginning to read three-letter words independently. They are learning to identify individual sounds and blend them together to read words. Students are also enjoying listening to stories read by their teachers and verbally retelling them to their classmates. This is helping to strengthen both their comprehension and oral language skills.

In Writing, students have been learning to correctly form the letters of the alphabet and listen carefully to the sounds in simple words to support their independent writing. They are talking and writing about their own experiences using modelled sentences and words displayed around the classroom. It has been wonderful to see students confidently copy sentences and attempt to write new words independently, showing great determination and persistence.

In Numeracy, FLC students have continued their learning in Counting and Place Value. They have been working hard towards their individual goals and have enthusiastically embraced opportunities to count objects in everyday situations. Students have been learning to identify numbers, create groups to represent quantities, order numbers from smallest to largest, and identify one more and one less. We are so proud of the effort and enthusiasm they continue to show in their learning.

It has been a fantastic start to Term 2, with students making excellent progress across all areas of their learning.
