Year 11 VM Students Visit To Positive Media
(Light FM) Studios
On Monday of Week 4, our Year 11 VM students attended an excursion to the studios of Positive Media, home to 89.9 The Light radio. This was a combined excursion for both our VM Literacy and Work-Related Skills classes. As students have a focus on digital literacy and media this term, this was a wonderful opportunity for our students to gain valuable insights into the workings of a media company and to gain an understanding of what goes into creating content for both radio and podcasts. They also had the opportunity to hear from two past students of MECS, Michael (MJ) and Cam Want.

On Monday the 11th of May our VM class went to Light FM radio station. We met Lucy, MJ, Cam and Casey. I personally really enjoyed the excursion, because I’ve never been to a radio station before and it was interesting to see what a recording studio looks like. I particularly enjoyed recording my podcast with Mrs Hellema. It was great stepping out of my comfort zone and doing something I had never done before.

On Monday 11 May, our Year 11 VM class took a trip to Positive Media, the home of 89.9 The Light. We met, Lucy & Kel, MJ, Cam, and the Producer Casey, who produces the Lucy & Kel Brekky Show. We got to know the people behind the voices. I learned that even the most introverted people, can do radio. One thing that I experienced was being able to ask Lucy & Kel a question about times that they had messed up on the radio, but it had turned into something good. For example, there was a time that Lucy had smelled smoke, but she was told that nothing was there and everything was fine. She shrugged it off until the smell got stronger, she then told the producer at that time, and they called the fire brigade. As it turns out there were a whole lot of batteries melting and exploding in the roof, and to this day Lucy says that she saved the station, which I believe is true because without her sense of smell ‘The Light’ would not be here right now. The excursion had a positive impact on me through being able to get out of my comfort zone by doing a podcast, it was quite nerve racking, but when you get into the flow, you can just keep bouncing off each other and it becomes a pleasant environment.

On Monday the 11th of May, our VM class visited Positive Media, home of 89.9 The Light. We had a tour of the office spaces and recording rooms, guided by MJ Want.
We watched Sharon and Cam Want record a segment for 'The Daily Show' and saw how they pre-recorded and produced their content.
Later, Casey let us go into the recording studio to create our own podcast. Tash and I recorded ours first, then everyone else had a turn. Afterwards, Josh, Tash, and I recorded another podcast together, which went for much longer and turned out even better.
We had so much fun recording our podcasts and seeing how everything worked behind the scenes.

On Monday 11 May, we went to Light FM Positive Media, home of 89.9 The Light. Whilst we were there, we heard from a range of people. Producer Casey (who also recorded us in the studio), Lucy and Kel who host the brekky show, Cam who records ‘The Daily Radio Show'. Cam also spoke with Ms Witt on his show and we watched the recording. One thing I learnt was that you don’t have to get a school pass or university degree to go into radio and plans change. So, even if you’re worried about not having any passes you can still follow dreams. One thing I loved the experience of was recording our own podcasts and getting to hear ourselves in the microphone. This excursion has a positive impact on me because now I have discovered that I can speak on a 'radio' (even if it wasn’t aired) so comfortably. Recording our own podcasts was such a cool experience and gave me some confidence to do that in the future if I wanted, I found it very natural to speak for ages and discuss topic with my friends. Lucy was very encouraging when we were recording and gave us some good feedback on how to improve if we were to continue.

On Monday 11th of May, our VM literacy/work related skills class went on an excursion to Light FM radio station. When we got there, we had a tour of the whole office. We also heard from MJ (head of content and the boss), Cam, Lucy and Kel, and producer Casey. We learned all about what goes on in the studios and how it’s all recorded and everything like that. One thing that really surprised me was that the music on the radio is planned one week in advance and not just randomly selected. One thing we experienced, and I think will stick with everyone in a positive way, was having the opportunity to record our own podcast and seeing everyone so excited and having fun.

Our VM class went to Light FM radio station on Monday in Week 4. When we were there, we met and talked to many different people that work behind the scenes and others that work on air. We met up with a boss called MJ who gave us a tour and showed us all the complicated tech stuff that makes sure they can save past recordings, keep data safe and broadcast to air. I also had the opportunity to record my own recording with Joshua, which was a very different and weird experience. It was a great experience overall and I learnt a lot.

On Monday 11th May, our Yr11 VM class visited the offices of Positive Media which is where 89.9 The Light is. It was a really fun experience getting to have a tour of the place, learning about all the planning that goes into what to talk about. There is a massive control room that helps broadcast the radio to 26 different places and that it must be kept at a certain temperature. One thing we got to do was record our own podcast and talk about whatever we wanted. It was kind of weird putting on headphones and hearing yourself talk but other than that it was very fun meeting all the people that work there. They were all friendly people to talk to.
