A Snapshot into Math

Learning Experience Overview

To understand how the position of a digit changes its value.

What students were asked to do

Select students were given a one-digit number card and asked to order themselves from smallest to largest. Then we asked students to pair up to create a two-digit number, then order themselves from smallest to largest. We challenged the students with the number cards not to talk, so it was the students on the floor job to guide their peers by questioning their choices.

The purpose of this challenge was for students to gain an understanding of the importance of a digit position and recognise its value in changing the size of the number.

Students were then tasked with rolling three dice to create the smallest and largest possible three-digit number.

What you can do now to continue the learning at home from this experience

When exploring and talking about numbers, highlight the importance of the digit zero’s position in changing a number's value.
