A Snapshot into Maths
Learning Experience Overview:
In Prep, we have been exploring data and statistics by collecting, sorting and representing information in different ways. We are learning how to organise data, look for patterns and use what we find to answer questions and make comparisons.
What children were asked to do:
Each child was given a range of shapes, including squares, rectangles, triangles, pentagons and hexagons. They identified the number of sides on each shape and sorted them into groups based on the number of sides. They then counted the shapes in each group and represented their findings on a bar graph. They discussed what their data showed, including which group had the most and least shapes.
Students used a checklist to help them stay on track and tick off each step as they worked. This supports their independence and encourages them to take responsibility for their own learning.
What you can do now to continue the learning at home from this experience:
- Look at your child’s graph together. Encourage them to tell you what it shows, and which group has the most and least.
- Practice sorting everyday items into groups based on their colour, shape, size or type.
- Explore shapes in your everyday environment. Look for 2D shapes around your home, such as circles, triangles, squares and rectangles. Can you name the shapes and count how many sides they have?
- Continue using counting strategies to identify the total number of objects
