Year 1 Bulletin

Learning Intention
To use skip counting to find the total of a collection. (perimeter)
Learning Experience Overview
Our focus in Multiplicative Thinking is on skip counting, simple multiplication, grouping and sharing. This week, students explored perimeter and learned how skip counting, repeated addition and multiplication can help us find the total distance around shapes with equal side lengths.
What We Asked Students to Do
Students counted the sides of each shape and used the given side lengths to calculate the perimeter. They wrote repeated addition and multiplication equations to find and record the total distance around each shape. A multiplication square was provided to support students in finding their answers, and we explored how skip counting connects to our times tables. Students who finished early created their own shapes and calculated their perimeters using both strategies.
How You Can Continue the Learning at Home
- Practise skip counting: Count forwards in 2s, 5s and 10s.
- Make equal groups: Use toys, blocks or other household items to make equal groups and count how many items there are altogether.
- Explore multiplication: Write repeated addition and multiplication equations to match equal groups.
- Explore perimeter: Find objects around your home with equal side lengths and discuss how to calculate the distance around them.
For example, if you have 4 groups of 3 blocks, you can skip count in 3s, add 3 + 3 + 3 + 3, or multiply 4 × 3 to find the total of 12 blocks.
Thank you for all your support!
