Grade 5

🌟Welcome to Term 3🌟

šŸ“š Reading

This term, we have begun reading our new class novel, Tom Appleby: Convict Boy, and students are already enjoying learning about life in colonial Australia. As we read, we will explore the characters, historical setting and key events while developing comprehension and discussion skills. Students will also continue to build vocabulary and make thoughtful predictions and connections throughout the novel.

Ā

āœļø Writing

We have been learning how to strengthen our sentences by using appositives and relative clauses to add extra detail and information. Students are practising incorporating these language features into their own writing to make it more engaging and informative. We have also begun planning and drafting Information Reports with a focus on clear structure and factual language.

Ā

āž— Mathematics

Our major focus is developing confidence when adding and subtracting fractions. Students are using visual models, number lines and written strategies to deepen their understanding of equivalent fractions before solving increasingly challenging problems. Continuing to practise multiplication facts at home will support success across many areas of mathematics.

Ā

🌿 Humanities

Students have started investigating the diverse biomes of Australia, exploring the unique climates, plants and animals found across the country. We are also learning about the important role First Nations Australians have played in caring for the land through traditional land management practices. These lessons are building an appreciation of Australia's environments and sustainable land management.
