Grade 6

Welcome to Term 3! It has been wonderful to see our students return with enthusiasm and a positive attitude as they begin their final semester of primary school. We are excited for another busy term filled with learning, growth and memorable experiences.

🌟 Welcome Circles & Our PROUD Values

We began the term by participating in our Welcome Circles within each classroom, with a strong focus on our PROUD Values. Students engaged in meaningful discussions about what these values look like in action and reflected on how they can continue to demonstrate them throughout their final semester at primary school.

It was fantastic to hear students share their ideas, experiences and goals, showing maturity and commitment to being positive role models within our school community.

📚 Reading

This week, students began our new novel study, Once by Morris Gleitzman.

Once follows the story of Felix, a young Jewish boy living in Poland during World War II. Believing his parents are in danger, Felix leaves the safety of the orphanage where he has been living and begins a journey that opens his eyes to the realities of the war. The novel explores themes of courage, hope, kindness and resilience, encouraging thoughtful discussion and critical thinking throughout our reading sessions.

We look forward to exploring this powerful story together over the coming weeks.

✍️ Writing

In Writing, students have commenced their Information Report unit.

To complement our novel study, students are researching Poland, developing their understanding of its geography, history, culture and significant landmarks. Throughout this unit, students will strengthen their research skills while learning how to organise factual information into clear, well-structured information reports.

➗ Mathematics

Our Mathematics focus this term is Fractions.

This week, students have been developing their understanding of adding and subtracting fractions with both related and unrelated denominators. They have been applying a range of strategies to solve problems, explain their thinking and build confidence when working with equivalent fractions.

We encourage students to continue practising these skills at home whenever possible.

🤝 Prep Buddies

On Wednesday, all Grade 6 classes enjoyed spending time with their Prep Buddies.

Students worked together to complete a "Get to Know Your Buddie" booklet, sharing information about themselves and learning more about one another. It was wonderful to see our Grade 6 students demonstrating our PROUD Values by showing kindness, patience, encouragement and respect throughout the session.

The friendships between our Grade 6 students and their Prep Buddies continue to grow and flourish, and we are incredibly proud of the leadership and care our students display each time they meet.
