Literacy

This week in Literacy, we focused on building our reading and spelling skills. We learned about adverbs of manner and how they describe how an action is done, while also continuing to develop our reading fluency by practising expression, accuracy and pace. A big focus was on making inferences, where students used clues from the text along with their prior knowledge to deepen their understanding. In spelling, we revised important patterns such as open and closed syllables and practised breaking words into syllables to support both reading and spelling. We also worked on tricky words like surprise, where and there, and students showed great effort in applying these skills.

Writing

This week was a review week in Writing, where students revisited key skills to strengthen their sentence construction. We practised using correct punctuation, including capital letters, full stops and question marks, and focused on including verbs to clearly show actions. Students also explored how adverbs can describe how, when and where actions happen, and how adjectives add detail to help the reader visualise. We also revised using conjunctions such as and, but, so and because to join ideas together. It was great to see students building more detailed and interesting sentences using these tools.

Maths

In Maths, we explored early multiplication and division concepts through doubling, halving and arrays. Students practised doubling numbers to 10 and representing this with addition equations, as well as halving numbers to 20 and linking this to subtraction. We also learned about arrays, including how to identify rows and columns and create our own. Skip counting in twos helped support our understanding of doubling, and we used concrete materials to form equal groups when exploring halving. Students did a fantastic job explaining their thinking and representing their learning in different ways.

Integrated

This week in Integrated, we began a new Geography unit exploring where we live and how we are connected to the wider community. Students identified their street, suburb and state, and discussed how these fit within Australia. They also created their own passports and luggage tags to represent their personal information, helping them understand how we are uniquely identified within a larger community.
