EDUCATION

Year 9 Textiles

Our year 9 textiles class has been busy preparing for summer by making their own shorts. What a great job they have done!

Year 11 Art Making and Exhibiting

As part of their Unit 2 explorations, students have researched the big hitting themes that inspire some of the most successful and controversial artists of our time. Renowned artist Ai Weiwei challenges China’s developing consumerist behaviours and the value and loss of traditional artisan skills.

To begin their process students in Year 11 developed their ceramic hand building techniques to create unique vessels, and then hand glazed their work with imagery and logos developed from the modern world. They then were challenged to mentally (and physically!) ‘let go’ of their hard work, with a focus on how it feels to disconnect ourselves from items and to create links and contrast between globalisation, consumerism and slow process art.

Caring for Baby – Year 11 Health and Human Development

As part of Year 11 Health and Human Development, students have taken part in a Baby and Co-Parenting Simulation, experiencing some of the realities of caring for an infant. The computerised babies require students to respond to needs such as feeding, burping, rocking and temperature control, while also recording rough handling or neglect.

Students have had to juggle everyday life (and interrupted sleep!), communicate with co-parents and helpers, and learn about responsibility, patience and teamwork. The practical provides plenty of social and emotional learning, while helping students explore relationships, infant development, nurturing, attachment and the resources required to care for a baby.

A big thank you to our parents and families who supported students throughout the experience — we’ve heard plenty of stories of “grandparents, aunties and uncles” stepping in for a spot of babysitting too! Truly takes a village to care for a computer child!
