Year 8 Badano Incursion – SGC: Verbal Combat

As part of the Year 8 Badano program, students recently participated in an engaging incursion presented by Brainstorm Productions. The performance, Verbal Combat, explored some of the social and online challenges that young people may encounter and encouraged students to think about how they can respond positively and responsibly.

Through a live theatre performance, students were presented with realistic situations involving friendships, bullying and cyberbullying, social media, mental health, peer pressure and online influences. The characters faced many of the pressures familiar to young people, including navigating friendships, managing conflict and deciding how to respond when they witnessed negative behaviour.

An important theme throughout the performance was the influence of the online world on young people's attitudes and decisions. With social media, AI-generated content and online influencers playing an increasing role in what students see and hear, students were encouraged to question the information they encounter online, think critically about its reliability and consider how online content can influence their choices and relationships.

The performance also encouraged students to reflect on the role they play when they see bullying or harmful behaviour. Rather than simply standing by or following the actions of others, students were challenged to consider how they can make positive choices, support their peers and contribute to a culture of respect.

Brainstorm Productions is endorsed by the Australian Government's eSafety Commissioner as a Trusted eSafety Provider, reflecting its work in providing quality online safety education for young people. The interactive and relatable nature of the performance provided our students with an engaging way to explore issues that are increasingly relevant to their everyday lives.
