Could St Monica Be a Role Model for Young People Today?
In a world where young people face many trials and challenges, from social pressure to uncertainty about the future, positive role models are more important than ever. One person from history who continues to inspire our young people today is St Monica, the mother of St Augustine and a saint of the Catholic Church. Although she lived in the fourth century, her life offers valuable lessons that are still relevant in the twenty-first century.
As Monicans well and truly know, one of St Monica's most admired qualities was her perseverance. She faced many difficulties throughout her life. Her husband was often difficult and did not share her faith, and her son Augustine spent many years making choices that concerned her. Instead of giving up, Monica remained patient and continued to support and pray for her family. Her determination teaches young people that challenges or obstacles, do not have to define their future. Success often comes through resilience, patience, and hope.
St Monica is an example of strong faith and conviction. She stayed true to her beliefs even when those around her opposed. In today's society, young people can feel pressured to fit in or follow popular trends. Monica's example encourages them to be confident in their values and to stand up for what they believe is right, even when it is difficult.
Monicans today can continue to find inspiration in St Monica's story. Students who are worried about exams, friendships, or family challenges can look to her perseverance and learn not to give up when life becomes difficult. Young people involved in College life or parish communities may also be inspired by her commitment to prayer and service. Like Monica, they can make a positive difference by supporting their friends, showing kindness to others, and remaining hopeful during confronting times. Some who have experienced family difficulties or who may have witnessed loved ones make poor choices may especially relate to Monica's patience and her belief that people can change and grow.
St Monica can be a role model today for her compassion and care for others. She cared deeply about her family and never stopped encouraging her son to become the best version of himself. Her story reminds us of the importance of kindness, forgiveness, and supporting those we love. These qualities help build strong relationships, friendships, families, and communities.
Some could argue that St Monica lived in a very different time and that modern role models should reflect the experiences of young people today. While it is true that society has changed significantly, many of the values Monica demonstrated, such as courage, resilience, faith, and compassion, are timeless. These qualities remain important regardless of the century in which a person lives.
St Monica’s perseverance in difficult circumstances, commitment to her beliefs, and care for others provide lessons that are as relevant now as they were over 1,600 years ago. The examples of young people who show resilience at school, support others through difficult times, or remain committed to their faith demonstrate how St Monica's values continue to inspire new generations. Her life shows that true strength is not only about achieving personal success but also about remaining faithful, hopeful, and compassionate in the face of life's challenges.
Let us be reminded of her extensive reach and influence, as we prepare to celebrate her during St Monica’s Week, Monday 24 – Friday 28, August 2026.
