Building A Culture of Respect: Working Together to Prevent Bullying

Bullying is not always obvious. While physical aggression and name-calling may be easier to recognise, harmful behaviours can also include social exclusion, intimidation, spreading rumours and the misuse of technology to target others. These behaviours can occur both at school and online, and their impact can extend well beyond the immediate incident. Recognising the signs early and responding appropriately is essential in supporting young people to develop healthy relationships and navigate challenges with confidence.

The Australian Government has recently launched Let's Stop Bullying, a valuable online resource designed to help families better understand bullying and other harmful behaviours, recognise potential warning signs and take practical steps to support young people. The website provides a range of free resources specifically developed for parents and carers, including guidance on navigating friendship difficulties, identifying harmful behaviours, supporting children who have been harmed and responding when a child may have caused harm.

One particularly important message is that parents and carers do not need to have all the answers to make a difference. Often, the most meaningful first step is creating opportunities for open, honest conversations. Taking the time to listen without immediately judging or dismissing a concern can help young people feel comfortable sharing their experiences. Changes in behaviour, withdrawal from friendships, reluctance to attend school or increased anxiety may also warrant a gentle conversation and further attention.

It is equally important that we help young people understand their own responsibility in building respectful relationships. This includes recognising the impact of their words and actions, taking accountability when they make mistakes, demonstrating empathy and having the courage to speak up when they witness someone being treated poorly. Our aim must be not only to respond when harm occurs, but also to develop young people who actively contribute to a positive and inclusive community.

We encourage all parents and carers to explore the Let's Stop Bullyingwebsite and familiarise themselves with the practical guidance available. These resources offer a useful starting point for conversations at home and reinforce the importance of a consistent approach between families and schools.
