Civics and Citizenship - Our Government, Laws and Democracy

Students have been sharing their first thinking around ‘Our Government, Laws and Democracy’ through the curriculum area of Civics and Citizenship. They have responded to questions about what they know, at this moment in time, about levels of government, types of citizenship, elections, laws and ethical decision making. Students will be participating in an excursion to Parliament Victoria in a few weeks, where they will have time and opportunity to learn about the values and features of Australia’s democratic institutions and systems, including the 3 levels of government and electoral systems. 

Students will also be learning about the rights and responsibilities that citizens have, and different types of citizenship, including national and global citizenship. They will also have time and opportunity to develop their understanding about how they can be better citizens and community members through shared values. 

We will also explore and engage in persuasive speaking and debates around issues that are relevant to the students, such as the Social Media Minimum Age law. Our understanding of ethical decision making will frame these debates and we will be looking at holding our own election on an issue to be decided.
