Reading   

In reading, we have begun reading the text War Horse by Michael Morpurgo by engaging in read-aloud shared reading. Through this historical fiction novel, we are exploring historical events during WWI and identifying themes of sacrifice, compassion, honour and companionship. We are exploring the range of new vocabulary that we have been exposed to and incorporating our own ideas into what we think topic specific vocabulary means. We are also using War Horse to frame our narrative writing process and are using elements of Joey’s journey to inspire our own writing.

We have also been looking at non-fiction texts providing information about how horses and animals were used in WWI. We are looking at the necessity of these uses of animals and will use these reasons to develop arguments for our persuasive writing piece. We will be looking at features of persuasive writing, such as emotive language and rhetorical questions, and examining how these features are used to convince the reader.

Every day, we also look at different NAPLAN style questions to promote our comprehension and inference skills and prepare our students for this assessment.
