Class 3 News

JESSICA MCCAUL

Dear Class 3 Friends and Families,

After NAPLAN, swimming lessons, Harmony Day celebrations and a Maths Main Lesson, we are now moving into our new Main Lesson: "Legendary Leaders" and preparing for the Autumn Festival.

Socially, Class 3 is reviewing ways in which we can help one another especially if we notice someone being 'picked on'. We have listened to stories about children who have been bullied and what bullying can look like and feel like. Being a friend who can support another child to let an adult know if they are being repeatedly intimidated is one way we can help others.

In Maths this year, Class 3 will continue to work on:

  • numbers up to 10 000
  • skip counting by all numbers up to 12
  • Times Tables 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 8x, 9x, 10x tables
  • representing practical problems in a narrative, pictorial and written form (number sentence)
  • using mental arithmetic strategies for addition and subtraction involving two- and three-digit numbers including: the jump strategy, the split strategy, bridging the decades, changing the order of addends to form multiples of 10
  • Solving simple equations with 2 operations

In "Legendary Leaders", we will be exploring ancient stories of authority and rulership in community. From the unconscious compliance with given rules which characterises the younger child, the emerging individuality now becomes aware of the laws and rules which underlie the social fabric of a community. Early traditions enshrined the community laws in divine authority: a good example from history and mythology is the proclamation of the Ten Commandments and the establishment of rulership among the ancient Hebrew people. From this historical/literary source the learning experience can be extended to an understanding of the role of authority vested in responsible adult carers such as teachers, and working with the laws/rules which govern classroom conduct.

I wish to express my gratitude to all the children and families in Class 3, in fact, the whole Alice Springs Steiner School Community for the time we have spent together over the last two years.

As I prepare for the next part of my journey, I wish you all the very best on yours.

Many thanks,

Jessica
