Year 3

In English Innovation, students will strengthen their narrative writing skills by exploring how authors craft engaging and purposeful stories. They will learn to develop interesting characters, create vivid settings, and structure narratives with a well-sequenced plot that builds suspense and captures the reader's interest. Using a range of mentor texts, students will identify and apply effective writing techniques to enhance their own writing. Throughout the writing process, Year 3 students will plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish their narratives, developing greater independence, confidence, and pride in their writing.
In Mathematics Innovation, students will explore the properties of numbers and how patterns emerge. They will investigate numbers and explore sequences based on multiples and connect patterns to visual or geometric representations. They will apply their understanding to describe the rules that underpin both numerical and geometric patterns, strengthening their ability to generalise and reason mathematically. Additionally, they will explore techniques to understand, plan, solve and check worded mathematical problems collaboratively.
In Languages Innovation, students will explore a variety of traditional and modern Chinese leisure activities, including jianzi (shuttlecock), Chinese chess, calligraphy during Term Three. Through games, storytelling and hands-on experiences, students will begin to understand the cultural and historical background of these pastimes. They will also compare them with familiar Australian activities, developing their ability to follow simple instructions in Chinese, describe what they enjoy, and express preferences. This unit encourages curiosity, builds basic language skills, and introduces students to the rich traditions of Chinese culture in fun and engaging ways.
In Animation Innovation, students will consider the history of moving pictures as a means of telling stories and communicating information and ideas. Together they will consolidate their animation practices using stop motion, flip books and digital applications to create a story or share a message of importance to them. They will hone their skills of storyboarding, scripting, drawing and editing their creations.
STEAM Innovation invites students to step into the world of engineering through a series of highly imaginative, hands-on challenges. The semester will begins by ensuring students understand the core mindset and skillsrequired of modern engineers. Students will quickly progress to utilizing computer-assisted design (CAD) and manufacturing tools, such as TinkerCAD and 3D printers. For their first project, students will analyse various architectural styles and investigate how engineers adapt building designs to minimise environmental impact. Combining these digital tools with physical materials, students will then design and construct models of their own sustainable ‘green buildings’, blending environmental awareness with structural design.
