Year 1

In STEAM Innovation, students will explore several fields of science and engineering, all of which will serve to expand their critical thinking skills and imaginative ability. First will come an introduction to the ‘Innovator’s Mindset’ and the relevant traits - which will teach students what it means to be an effective engineer/scientist and how to best employ the traits in their learning. Then, students will have the opportunity to learn about the fundamentals of computer programming - in which they will use unifix blocks to model the fundamentals of coding to create a wide range of displays.
In Robotics Innovation, students will develop their coding and computational thinking skills using Bee-Bots and Botzees Minis. They will create simple coding sequences, solve coding challenges, and explore how robots can be programmed to complete different tasks. Students will work collaboratively by sharing ideas, taking turns, and supporting one another while learning to use and care for the robotics equipment responsibly. These engaging experiences will build confidence, creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork skills as students continue their robotics journey.
This term in Art Innovation, students will explore the life and artwork of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, learning about her determination, creativity and the unique style that has made her one of the world's most recognisable contemporary artists. Students will investigate Kusama's use of bold colours, repeating patterns and pumpkins as inspiration for their own artworks. Throughout the unit, they will develop paper mâché and painting techniques while learning about the characteristics of sculpture as an art form. Using these new skills, students will design and create their own vibrant pumpkin sculptures, encouraging creativity, confidence and artistic expression.
