Year 2

In English Innovation, students will further develop their narrative writing skills by exploring how to create engaging stories with a clear beginning, middle, and end. They will focus on sequencing events, developing interesting characters and settings, and using descriptive language to bring their ideas to life. Throughout the writing process, students will plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish their narratives as they continue to build confidence and see themselves as capable authors.

In Mathematics Innovation students will investigate the properties of numbers and consider the patterns inherent in addition and multiplication sequences. They will engage in strategies to build accuracy and efficiency as they could large collections of objects. They will apply their understanding to investigate solution techniques for a range of mathematical questions and problems to develop their confidence to explain and justify their thinking.

In STEAM Innovation, students will explore all elements of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths in order to understand the different roles engineers and scientists can have. Their first challenge of the semester will have them build model Martian rovers to answer questions about the red planet. Next will be an investigation into ecosystems and biomes in which students will construct miniature ecosystems containing fauna from the school environment.

In Game Design Innovation, students will look at the basic mechanics of games that they may play everyday. Identifying, playing and discussing various games opens up opportunities and ideas for the students to develop their own style of game. To begin with, a basic game of Memory Match and Snap will get the ball rolling before students plan and collaborate a board game together. 

This term in Art Innovation, students will collaborate with a visiting artist to design and create a welcoming mural for the entrance of Glen Waverley Primary School. Throughout the project, students will explore how symbolism, colour and imagery can communicate ideas and represent a community. They will develop drawings inspired by the values, people and experiences that make our school unique, before refining their ideas through a range of painting techniques. As students learn about the mural-making process, they will work collaboratively to plan, create and contribute to a large-scale artwork. This exciting project will help students develop their creativity, communication and teamwork skills while experiencing what it is like to work as part of a real-world art project.
