Terrific Times in Year Two

We have had a wonderful time celebrating Book Week in Year 2! Each day, we have explored a different Book Week title from this year or previous years, reading the stories closely and taking part in a range of fun and creative activities. We have been looking beyond just the story, discussing punctuation, interesting vocabulary, spelling, how the author has written the story and how the illustrations help to tell the story.
One of our class favourites was Derek, written by Anne Donaldson and illustrated by Matt Shanks. We loved creating our own versions of Derek and thinking about the questions and ideas that make each of us curious. You can continue the Book Week fun at home by talking about the books you read together. Ask your child to notice the punctuation, interesting words, spelling choices, illustrations and how the author has put the story together. You could also explore some of the other 2026 Book Week books together!
In Maths, we have been busy exploring 2D shapes. We have been learning to name shapes and identify their vertices and sides, as well as learning the difference between regular and irregular polygons. Ask your child if they can explain what makes a polygon regular or irregular!
Our check list we followed was: is it a 2D shape? are all the sides the same length? are the sides closed? To finish our unit, we put our learning into practice by designing and creating our very own 2D shape robots. We had to carefully consider the shapes we used and identify their features and we think our robots turned out pretty fantastic!
