Chess

Chess Season Starts for 2026:
The chess season has started with the traditional Staff vs Students Tournament. Like last year, this was a great event with a powerful display of chess skills shown by the many of the representative players. As the cliché saying goes, the winner on the day was Chess, with all taking part having a great deal of fun.
The Staff vs Students games gave a chance for year 7 students to come and join the chess club. I welcome these new players, with some showing some promising chess skills.
McCarthy chess representative selections will start week 5, with the top players being chosen to be on the team for this year. During this term, the Calrossy vs McCarthy Cup and the Farrer vs McCarthy Cup will begin, with games played at the end of the term. The NSW Secondary Schools competition will also begin this term, continuing into Term 3.
The McCarthy Chess Club is open to both social and representative players. All players are given a chance to play against the other schools in the region. Anyone wishing to learn to play chess should think about joining the chess club.
The Chess Club plays every Friday, second break, in J3. The Google Classroom code for the club is x37uqvu.
Chess Fun Fact:
The first computer program to beat a chess grandmaster was Deep Thought in 1988.
