Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

Yaama students and families,

As we begin the 2026 school year, we recognise the importance of culture, connection and community in shaping positive learning experiences for our students. We are excited to continue working alongside our young people and families to strengthen identity, belonging and opportunity across our school.

Our team has been working hard behind the scenes to create meaningful new cultural opportunities for our students. This year, Layla, Baylee and Hannah will be supporting students in classes, helping to strengthen engagement and cultural connection across the school. We are also pleased to share that Lisa will continue overseeing our internal cultural programs and supporting students and families throughout the year.

As we begin the year, we want to reinforce the importance of maintaining high expectations in learning. We encourage all students to come to class prepared with the correct equipment, to complete classwork to the best of their ability, and to demonstrate respect for their peers and teachers at all times. Strong learning habits and a positive academic mindset are essential in helping each student achieve success and work towards a hope-filled future. By working together to uphold these standards, we continue to strengthen a culture of learning across our school community.

We are excited to have our Aboriginal Studies elective up and running for Years 9 and 10. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to deepen their understanding and celebrate Aboriginal culture, history and perspectives. Later this term, students will have the opportunity to go on Country as part of their learning. We are especially pleased to be working alongside our new Armidale Catholic Schools Subject Matter Expert, Jolene Faint. We warmly welcome Jolene and look forward to creating new opportunities under her guidance.

We also encourage our students and families to submit artwork to the Joblink Plus First Nations Art Competition. This is a fantastic opportunity for students and families to showcase their creativity and cultural pride. Further details can be found here: https://www.joblinkplus.com.au/first-nations-art-competition

Additionally, we are looking forward to attending Careers on Country on the 11th and 12th of March at Trelawney Station. Careers on Country is a hands-on careers event focused on real-world pathways, employment opportunities and learning on Country. Students will have the opportunity to connect with universities, training providers and industry representatives, making this a valuable experience for those considering their future pathways beyond school.

We are excited for the year ahead and look forward to working together to create meaningful cultural learning experiences while maintaining a strong and focused academic culture across our school community.

Yaama! A Warm Welcome to Our Students and Families

We are delighted to welcome both new and returning students to McCarthy Catholic College (MCC) and our vibrant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. This year, we look forward to walking alongside each student on their cultural and educational journey, providing opportunities to connect, learn, and celebrate culture throughout the year.

Gamilaraay Language Program with Winanga-li:

The Gamilaraay Language Program invites students to explore the beauty of language by learning to read, write, and speak Gamilaraay. This program is supported by digital resources, Community members with knowledge, and immersive on-Country experiences, helping students connect deeply with their cultural heritage.

Didgeridoo and Mentoring Workshops (Boys):

Led by Uncle Mark Atkins, the Didgeridoo and Mentoring Workshops offer boys the opportunity to learn to play the didgeridoo, practice circular breathing, engage in cultural storytelling, and develop leadership skills that will benefit them both inside and outside the classroom.

Ngaar Wirribiiyan Girls Cultural Program - Gomeroi Education:

For Year 7 and 8 girls, the Ngaar Wirribiiyan Girls Cultural Program provides mentorship and cultural connection. Participants are supported to build confidence, explore career pathways, and strengthen their cultural identity in a nurturing environment.

Cultural Dance and Song Program - Gomeroi Education:

Students can learn dance and song, share their learning with younger students at MCC, and engage with community experts while respecting important cultural protocols.

Strengthening Interschool and Cultural Connections:

In partnership with St Michael’s Manilla, students have opportunities to strengthen interschool and cultural connections. They can explore movement, creativity, and rhythm in a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment.

Getting Involved:

Students can express interest in programs through the classroom or via email. Parents and carers are asked to confirm participation through Compass. Students are encouraged to check emails and classroom notices regularly to ensure they don’t miss out on opportunities. Please contact Olivia Guilbert or Lisa Jameson on mccadmin@arm.catholic.edu.au for the classroom code.

We warmly invite all students to participate in ways that feel right for them, to enjoy learning, to connect deeply with culture, and to strengthen our MCC community.

For more information, please feel free to make contact. We can’t wait to share this exciting journey with you!
