Year 7 Languages at McCarthy Catholic College:
Learning a language is about more than vocabulary and grammar - it is a gateway to understanding cultures, building confidence and developing global awareness. At McCarthy Catholic College, Year 7 students begin this journey through one of three engaging language classes: Japanese, Italian and Indonesian.
Each language offers students a unique insight into the traditions, customs and ways of life of people around the world. Across all classes, students are encouraged to communicate, collaborate and develop curiosity about cultures beyond their own. The start of the year has been filled with enthusiasm as students settle into their language class and begin building foundational skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing.
Japanese:
The Year 7Japanese students have had a strong start to the year, showing enthusiasm and a positive attitude towards learning a new language. So far, the focus has been on building a solid foundation in Japanese to develop confidence in authentic interaction.
Students are regularly using Japanese in meaningful classroom contexts, including greeting one another upon entering and exiting the classroom, participating in a formal class greeting, responding to roll call, and using thank you and you’re welcome in Japanese. These consistent routines support students in becoming comfortable hearing and speaking Japanese as part of everyday communication.
For the remainder of Term 1, students will explore the language further as they begin to communicate about themselves, extending their skills in greetings and numbers into more personal and purposeful language use. This strong foundation will continue to support confident communication as students progress throughout the year.
Italian:
Benvenuti!
Welcome to the beginning of your journey into the heart of Italian language and culture. Italian is often called the "language of music" due to its rhythmic cadence and melodic sounds. By joining this course, you are opening a "new window from which to look at the world".
Beyond just learning vocabulary, students will explore the rich artistic heritage of the Renaissance, discover the secrets of authentic cuisine, and build the confidence to navigate Italy from its historic cities to its hidden villages.
As the proverb says, "A goccia a goccia si scava la pietra" (drop by drop the stone is hollowed)—with steady effort and curiosity, students will find themselves conversing with ease. Let’s begin this adventure together and embrace la dolce vita!
A presto! Ciao!
Indonesian:
In our Indonesian class, students have been settling into classroom routines, including using greetings and farewells, starting each lesson with a prayer, and responding to the roll using Indonesian language and lots of enthusiasm. Ya, Bu!
Students have learned to introduce themselves in Indonesian, including the use of a Balinese naming tradition based on the order of their birth within the family. As the term continues, students will also engage in more extended interactions including talking about how they are feeling and where they are from.
As well as language, we have started to explore Indonesian geography and some cultural traditions, including the wearing of batik sarongs. Cantik sekali!
Looking Ahead:
As the year continues, Year 7 students will further develop their language skills while deepening their cultural understanding. Through languages, students are learning to see the world from new perspectives - an essential skill for the future.
McCarthy Catholic College is proud to offer a diverse and engaging Languages program that encourages students to become curious, respectful and confident global citizens.
