Year 3 to Year 6
Welcome to Term 2!
Staff and students have hit the ground running!
Congratulations to the Year 3 assembly last week! Students shared their understanding of democracy, the government and rules. The students have thoroughly enjoyed learning about it in their civics and citizenship lessons during Term 1. They have a clearer understanding of how our country is run and why rules are so important. Well done Year 3!

In addition, this Term is a special time for Year 3 students preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation Celebration. A special Parent /Student workshop for candidates and a retreat for all of the students is coming soon!

Year 3 to Year 6 students have been working hard on their Talk 4 Writing teaching and learning. The Talk for Writing approach enables children to read and write independently for a variety of audiences and purposes within different subjects. A key feature is that children internalise the language structures needed to write through ‘talking the text’, as well as close reading. The approach moves from dependence towards independence, with the teacher using shared and guided teaching to develop the ability in children to write creatively and powerfully. Junior School Teachers have been refining their teaching skills using Scholastic Lit Pro Lexile program to support students to further improve their reading and comprehension skills! The Lexile data in Literacy Pro measures two critical aspects relevant to reading comprehension development:
1. Student Reading Ability—through the Lexile test
2. Text Complexity—analysis of Lexile level of books and other texts.
It determines the level of text complexity a student can read and understand in the form of a student Lexile. Students search online for a good fit book.
They can:
· Search for books they CAN read in their Lexile® reading range
· Use interest categories to help them find a book they WANT to read.
The students are buzzing and ready for the big Term ahead!
