Celebrating Community, Language, and Culture this Father’s Day

Yaama ngindaay-uu, (Hello to you all,)

Our classrooms have been filled with vibrant energy and deep respect recently as students prepared for Father's Day in a truly meaningful way. Rather than creating standard greeting cards, our young learners embarked on a rich cultural journey, weaving the Gamilaraay language and local Dreaming stories into their celebrations.

In our language sessions, students explored the power of traditional words, learning how to connect with culture through Gamilaraay terms for prayer, reflection, and gratitude. They spent time understanding the depth behind words, using them to express their appreciation for the fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and male role models who guide them every day.

Alongside their language studies, the students immersed themselves in local Dreaming stories. These ancient narratives provided a beautiful foundation for the children to explore values of family, protection, and connection to Country. 

Chastity has been working g hard on Google meets with her fellow Wii Gaay students. They are exploring the finer details of creating their own books. 

I am incredibly proud of how thoughtfully the students engaged with the Gamilaraay culture, and we hope these special cards brought warmth and joy to your Father’s Day celebrations.
