 R U OK? Day

In term three, we have built a lovely tradition at MITS of ending the term with an R U OK? Day celebration. This is a chance for the students to get together for some learning on how we can support someone in our lives who might be going through a hard time, and how we can speak up if we are struggling ourselves. We spend the day participating in activities that support our own wellbeing, and encourage connection, fun and reflection.

This year, we made healthy breakfasts, did some mindfulness and meditation to support our minds, made bracelets, keychains and a canvas for the classroom that shared positive messages of support, and participated in some outside games that encouraged us to move our bodies and connect with our peers.

We finished the day decorating cupcakes – making one to eat and one to gift to someone special – and making gratitude letters to send to a friend or family member back home.

In our boarding houses, we encouraged positive connection with games of ‘conversation bingo’, cupcake decoration and a visit from our favourite wellbeing dogs – Ruby and Rafa.

It was a fantastic day, with an important message – check in on your friends and family and if you’re having a hard time, there’s no shame in speaking up.
