Student Leaders Making a Difference

Student voice continues to have a positive impact on life at MITS, with our Student Leaders demonstrating what it means to care for their school community through action. By listening to their peers, representing student perspectives and helping drive positive change, they are making a difference to the experience of students across the school.

This year, Student Leaders have played an important role in the development of our School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) framework. Built around our values of Culture, Courage, Care and Respect, the framework reflects the kind of school community students want MITS to be. Through their input, Student Leaders have helped shape a shared understanding of how we support one another, celebrate positive contributions and create a strong sense of belonging.

The leadership shown by students throughout this process has been outstanding. They have gathered feedback from their peers, shared ideas, asked thoughtful questions and helped ensure that student perspectives remain at the centre of decision-making.

Each Friday, the Student Leadership Team meets to discuss the ideas and feedback collected through student suggestion boxes. These meetings provide students with a direct pathway to raise issues, propose improvements and contribute to the ongoing development of the school. As the Student Leaders often remind us, they want MITS to be a place where everyone's ideas are heard, and they continue to encourage students to share their thoughts.

A number of positive changes have already come from these conversations. Student feedback has influenced food options available at school, including the return of fortnightly lunches from local First Nations business Jarrah Catering. Student Leaders are also working alongside one of our incredible MITS volunteers to explore additional hot lunch options for Term 4.

Following our Celebration of the Arts, Student Leaders have also helped bring more colour and creativity to MITS by displaying student artwork throughout the school. These displays celebrate the talent, culture and pride of our students while helping create welcoming and inspiring learning spaces for everyone.

Perhaps most importantly, our Student Leaders are demonstrating that leadership involves listening, showing care for others and contributing positively to the school community. Through their willingness to represent their peers and work collaboratively, they are helping ensure that student voice remains an important part of life at MITS.

There are many more exciting ideas currently being explored, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact our Student Leaders continue to have on the MITS community.
