Year 6 Spotlight

Maths: Converting Units of Measurement

So far this term the Year 6s have learnt about converting units of measurements. We have focused on converting capacity, mass and length by multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000 accurately.

In class we measured ourselves and converted our heights into centimetres, metres and even kilometres! We also measured and converted lengths of the netball/basketball court and objects in our classrooms.

Humanities

We watched the Socceroos video and discussed the power of diversity and being proud of our heritage.

In Humanities we worked on making postcards from countries representing our family’s heritage. In Year 6 we have people connected to or from all over the world; people from Asia, Europe, and even some of our parents were born in Africa!

Over 50 countries are represented from our Year 6 students!

We have made postcards from our country saying where we were from, including facts, about their population, languages and national foods.

We also made a video talking about where our family is connected to, celebrating our diversity! Overall it was a very fun activity!

Writing

Last term in Literacy block we were focusing on science fiction. For writing we learned about ‘what if’ questions which helped us write our science fiction stories. A 'what if' question is the starting point to almost every science fiction. My 'what if' question was, 'What if humans were replaced by robots?' Penny’s was, 'What if you could travel to another universe similar to ours?'

Once we had all finished writing our stories we recorded them and made them into audio books on Book Creator. We made front covers, blurbs and chapters just like a proper story! It was so much fun to learn about a new style of writing!

In term three we learned about, planned and wrote, sci-fi narratives. We learned that science fiction starts with a question like 'what if AI took over the world', 'what if we could bring back the dinosaurs' or 'what if all the countries stopped communicating'.
