Kitchen Garden

This week Years 3-5 had a very busy session in our garden and achieved a great deal, getting beds ready for lots of Spring planting.

Firstly, we moved our compost bin to a new spot and explored what had developed inside our compost bin. We found that all our kitchen and garden scraps had broken down nicely to form a rich compost to add to our garden beds and help us grow new plants.

The students took samples of the compost and worked in teams to discover and record all the little mini-beasts that were in there helping to break down the scraps.

Then various work pairs cleaned out the chook shed, shovelled soil and the compost into our new garden beds, bottled up our worm juice, cleared under the orchard, harvested our potatoes, emptied lots of the beautiful Clyde’s Compost into all the garden beds, chopped up materials for the new compost bin, spread some straw and did some weeding. Great work everyone!

Foundation-2 were in the kitchen today, making the most of plentiful eggs and lemons to make some delicious Lemon Curd. 

We had to separate 15 eggs! Everyone got to do at least one, so this was a new skill learnt for many of them, and I have to say they did a great job, with maybe only one or two broken yolks.  There was also lots of lemon zest to be grated and juice to be squeezed, so all children had jobs to do.

After putting most of it into sterilised jars, there was just enough left for all of us to try some. The verdict from the kids was that it was ‘actually really good’, sweet, but at the same time a little bit sour!🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋
