STEM

This term in STEM, students across the school have been stepping into the shoes of real scientists by taking part in ongoing investigations that have run over several weeks. They have been forming hypotheses, designing and running experiments, making careful observations, and collecting and analysing data to uncover patterns and draw conclusions.

 

Our Grade 1/2 students have been exploring the explosive question: What factors affect how volcanoes erupt? In groups, they’re building their own mini volcanoes and testing fun variables (like the amount, type, or temperature of vinegar) to see which eruptions fizz the highest and last the longest.

Our Grade 3/4 scientists have been getting their hands dirty investigating the question: What helps seeds grow best? Each group is testing one variable (water, light, soil, temperature or even salt levels) and tracking their seed growth with measurements, tables and graphs as they watch their tiny plants take shape.

Our Grade 5/6 students dived into the world of bath bombs as they investigated the question: What factors affect how fast a bath bomb fizzes? They tested different temperatures, liquids, amounts of water, and bath bomb sizes, analysing their data to see what made the biggest difference to the rate at which the bath bombs dissolved.

Across all year levels, students have been eagerly engaging with hands-on experimenting, discovering how evidence, curiosity, and creativity help us understand the world just like real scientists.
