A Little Bit Of Unicorn Magic In Prep

Whether you believe in unicorns or not, our Prep students know that magical things can happen when you believe! And this week, something rather magical happened in our classroom…

A unicorn decided to pay us a visit! 

Now, we are still trying to work out exactly how it managed to get into our classroom. Did it sneak through the door? Fly in through the window? Perhaps it used a little unicorn magic? These were just some of the very important questions the Preps were asking!

Of course, a magical visitor like this provided the perfect opportunity for a writing prompt. We spent time discussing where the unicorn might have come from, how it got into our classroom, what it might have been doing, and most importantly, how we could describe it. We have been learning about adjectives, so the unicorn gave us plenty of opportunities to think of interesting words to describe its appearance.

Was it colourful? Sparkly? Fluffy? Magical? Enormous? Did it have a magnificent rainbow mane? Did it have a little bit of glitter in its mane as there was glitter on the floor in our classroom.

After lots of excitement, discussions and sharing of ideas, the students set off to complete some independent writing. And I could not be prouder of them.

At the beginning of the year, the students were still learning how to put their ideas onto paper. Fast forward to now, and most of the Preps are writing sentences independently and confidently. They are using their growing knowledge of sounds, letters, words, punctuation and sentence structure to communicate their ideas.

And what fantastic ideas they have!

Every piece of writing is a little snapshot of their learning journey.

This time of the year is when the magic really happens in the classroom. Not just the unicorn kind of magic, but the learning, progress and growth kind of magic too!

I absolutely love this time of the year. It is amazing to look around our classroom and see just how far each and every one of my Prep students has come. Their growth is something to be incredibly proud of, and I feel very lucky to be able to watch it happen.

So, whether or not you believe in unicorns, I think we can all agree on one thing, there is certainly some magic happening in Prep!
