Year Five

Welcome to Week Six!
It’s hard to believe we are already more than halfway through Term One. The Year Five students have settled beautifully into the school year and are showing increasing confidence in their learning and classroom routines. It has been wonderful to see friendships strengthen, positive learning habits develop, and students embracing new challenges with enthusiasm.
Reading
In Reading, Students have been focusing on sequencing events to strengthen their overall reading comprehension. By identifying the correct order of events in a text, Students are developing a deeper understanding of plot development, cause and effect, and how ideas connect throughout a story.
It has been fantastic to see students becoming more independent in their reading strategies and more confident in explaining their thinking. We encourage continued reading at home and discussing the sequence of events in stories to further strengthen these skills.
Writing
Students have been developing their typing skills to build fluency, accuracy and confidence when publishing their work digitally. Alongside this, they have been exploring both persuasive and narrative writing in preparation for their NAPLAN testing as well as connecting to our first unit of inquiry. Students are learning how to structure persuasive texts by clearly stating their opinion and supporting it with strong reasons and evidence, while also crafting engaging narratives with detailed characters, setting descriptions and well-sequenced events. It has been wonderful to see their creativity grow as they apply these skills in their writing pieces.
Mathematics
Students have been exploring fractions and percentages, developing their understanding of how they relate to one another and how they are applied in real-world contexts. They have also been investigating area and perimeter, learning how to calculate and compare measurements of different shapes. In preparation for NAPLAN, students have been revising key concepts and practising problem-solving strategies, with a focus on explaining their reasoning clearly and working accurately under timed conditions. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they tackle increasingly challenging tasks.
Inquiry
We have begun our new unit on Leadership. Students have been exploring the qualities that make an effective leader, such as empathy, responsibility, resilience and strong communication skills. We have also discussed the different forms leadership can take, recognising that leaders exist in many settings — within schools, communities and the wider world. Students have thoughtfully reflected on leaders who matter to them personally and considered what makes these individuals inspiring and impactful. It has been wonderful to see the depth of discussion and personal connections being made as we begin this unit.
