Year Two

Welcome to week 6 of our Year 2 newsletter!
Our fortnight of learning has been busy, enaging and exciting, with treasured learning experiences. It has been wonderful to see students showing the school values as they have now settled into our routines.
Reading
Using our prior knowledge, we have been learning to predict possbile words we may find assocoiated within a the text. Looking at the title, front cover and subject knowledge, students are encouraged to think about the text and the types of topic specific words they may encounter.
This helps students understand how to read and comprehend the words within the text.
Writing
Students have been learning how to write a speech that persuades the reader. Our persuasive writing and speeches have been centered around student leadership, in particular class captain. Students wrote about what strengths and characters traits they have (using our school's IB Learner Profile) to become a class captain.
We also continue to strengthen our retelling skills both verbally and in written texts. Our stories chosen are captivating and engaging. This gives students rich content to write a retell using the beginning, middle and end, including the main details and events needed to give a well structured retell of texts read.
Maths
Our classes have been exploring and deepening our understanding of collecting data and displaying the data collected by creating graphs. Students are connecting our Inquiry Unit, collecting data based on class celebrations. We created a pictograph using the title "Favourite celebration foods in our class", learnin about how to create and use an axis, title and labels for a graph.
Unit of Inquiry – Who We Are
Our central idea: "People express important events through celebrations and traditions".
Wow! What a marvelous introduction to our first unit's provocation! Our classes are so rich in culture and traditions, our students were full of questions and wondering (so were the teachers!) We will continue to discuss the events we celebrate and how those artefacts are used in celebrations.
Wellbeing
We continue to strengthen our resilience, navigating new classrooms and friendships and deepening our understanding of the Learner Attributes.
Reminders
Hats are to be worn when outside for the whole of Term One. Please kep an eye out for misplaced hats or provide something they can wear in the interim.
Please listen to your child read for at least 10 minutes each night. The same book can be read more than once, asking questions, focusing on fluency, expression, character voices, retelling the beginning, middle and end and recalling facts.
Reading logs will be checked regularly, with the expectations of recording your books. Feel free to have your children help you write the titles themselves to assist.
Homework has been explained and given out. Please take a look at your childs work and reach out to your child's teacher if needing clarification.
Warm regards,
The Year Two Team.
