Student Leadership

Dear Year Saltwater Families,
We are excited to officially launch our 2026 Student Leadership Program and continue strengthening student voice across our school. At Saltwater, leadership is not simply about holding a title, it is about modelling our values, demonstrating integrity and contributing positively to our community.
This year, students have been introduced to three key leadership opportunities: Class Captains, Junior School Council (JSC) Representatives and House Captains in Year Six.
Class Captains
Each class has selected one Class Captain to represent their peers. Teachers launched the process in a way that best suited their classrooms, with students engaging in speeches, written applications and class discussions.
Class Captains play an important role in supporting their class and modelling our school values. They assist with routines, support communication within the classroom and represent student voice at a year level. Captains were presented with their badge and certificate at their year-level assembly, marking the beginning of their leadership journey for 2026.

Junior School Council (JSC)
Following their presentation at assembly, Class Captains were invited to nominate for Junior School Council. Only Class Captains are eligible to run for JSC, ensuring candidates have already demonstrated leadership within their class.
Students delivered a speech (maximum 90 seconds) outlining why they would like to be a JSC Representative, why the role is important to them, how they would represent their peers and what improvements they would like to see within our school. Students then voted within their year level for three representatives — one from each timetable group.
JSC representatives will be formally announced at assembly and presented with their badge and certificate. We commend all students who spoke with confidence and passion about creating positive change at Saltwater.
2026 House Captains and Vice Captains
For 2026, each House will appoint two House Captains and two Vice Captains. Applications were reviewed carefully using a shared rubric, with feedback gathered from classroom teachers, specialists and previous teachers. This collaborative approach ensures selections are based on merit, leadership and character.
We are proud of the maturity and integrity shown by students throughout this process and look forward to announcing our House leadership team.

House Points
House Points officially commenced on Monday 16 February and will run across a two-week period. Year 6 students will collect tokens on Thursday 27 February.
House Points are awarded consistently across all settings, in classrooms, specialist lessons, learning spaces and in the yard during duty. This initiative encourages students to demonstrate our school values at all times, not just within their own classroom.
The House system continues to build school spirit, teamwork and a strong sense of belonging. We look forward to celebrating the efforts of our students and seeing friendly competition flourish throughout the year.
Strengthening Student Voice
Our focus this term is not only on appointing leaders, but on developing leadership skills and ensuring student perspectives are genuinely valued and prioritised. By creating structured opportunities for representation, we are empowering students to contribute meaningfully to our school community.
We congratulate all students who nominated, applied or presented speeches. The courage, confidence and respect demonstrated throughout the leadership process has been outstanding.
We look forward to working alongside our 2026 student leaders as they help shape another successful year at Saltwater.
