Year One

Welcome back to Week 6 of Term One.

In Week 5 The First 20 Days of learning has concluded and  students have now settled into our classroom routines.

In Week 6, students have begun learning about our First Unit of Inquiry.

Transdisciplinary Theme: Who we are

Central Idea:

Understanding and respecting others supports us to build positive relationships.

Lines of Inquiry

  • Different relationships and why they are important.

  • How we build and maintain relationships.

  • Understanding empathy and how to resolve conflict.

Reading

In reading, students were learning about concepts of print to learn what books, print and written language are, and how they function. They were learning to explore the similarities and difference between digital and printed texts.

In addition to this, students have been learning and practicing to choose just right texts and reasons when students might abandon books while circling back to choosing appropriate book selections. Students have been practicing to apply 'Good Reader Strategies' to help comprehend the text they are reading and to read with fluency using punctuation marks.

Furthermore, students have been exploring multiple texts and learning to make connections while retelling familiar stories using key events and characters in order.

Spelling/Phonics/Word Work

Students have been exploring the long /e/ and the short /a/ sound in mentor texts. Students were able to write down some words that they knew have the long /e/ sound and short /a/ sound in them and identified the spelling patterns.

In addition to this, students have been exploring the word 'Giggle' and how they can utilise the word in a sentence, define the word, understand the word through synonyms, antonyms, idioms and how it is represented as a picture as well as a spelling connection such as giggled and giggling.

Writing/Handwriting

In writing students were able to practice writing a recount of their weekend and students have been practicing to stretch out words to hear all the sounds when writing about a topic.

Furthermore, students have been exploring 'Who they are/All about me' focusing on describing themselves such as their name, age, family, strengths, challenges, hopes/dreams, passions, dislikes and an item (treasure) of importance to them.

Handwriting focus has been to practice correctly forming the letters 'd', 'g', 'q', 'w', 'v' and 'u' on dotted thirds so that students can improve their handwriting and letter formation. Also, students have been practising writing correct formation of numbers 0 – 9.
