“In this gouache on archival paper, my intention was to capture the atmosphere and essence of the original photo. The photo was taken by my mother, taking place just a few weeks before my black belt ceremony. I wanted to create the feeling of familiarity between the kids, as I was close with my peers. But I also wanted to illustrate the harmful effects of time. I do not remember any of my friend’s names, their voices or their demeanours. The photograph is symbolic of memory and sentiment as well as our disconnection from it. Using gouache, I wanted to highlight the prevalence of colour in childhood, and how holding onto these memories allows me to relive my youth.”
