Yr 7 + 8 Escape the Dark Gut! - GTAC Excursion Reflection

Student Experience of GTAC Science Activites:

Escape the Dark Gut was one of the best science activities we have ever done!! We learnt about fecal transplants and transferring healthy microbes from a healthy rat to a sick rat. This meant we worked with rat poo! We processed dried poo using saline and different machines to extract the healthy gut microbes and make a solution for the poor rat.

After this we got to do the escape rooms. We had 10 minutes to solve each room. One had a heat gun. The room next door had a black light torch that made numbers in mold glow. Another had hidden pieces of food! Later on one of the rooms needed us to de-code letters. This room was the most challenging because it took a while to understand what we needed to do.

We enjoyed learning about different microbes, how many there are (trillions in your body!) and how they can affect us. All of us also learnt to look at problems in different ways, and that every detail counts. During these activities we were in groups of five. We had to work together and help each other along the way. We would have never escaped the rooms or helped the rat to get its healthy microbes!
