Reading is Magic

This year’s CBCA book fair theme is ‘Reading is Magic’. We’re celebrating reading stories and their amazing power to transport minds. 

Our book character dress-up day will be on Thursday the 22nd of August. Parents are invited to come and watch the parade that starts at 9:30 am. Pre-school siblings are encouraged to dress up and attend as well.

A book fair will occur on the same day.  Children will come home with wish lists after looking at the books in the Parish Hall.  These may be purchased in person by parents or by online. Opening times: 9am -3pm

Children are encouraged to use items already in the home for their costumes - no need to spend any money. If their favourite book is about an everyday kid - then come as that character in regular clothes, with your book in hand.

Students struggling for ideas should ask their teachers or find Mrs Thomsen or Mrs Middleton for help. 

A sentence starter sheet will be sent home with students to help with what to tell their friends and audience during the parade. Seniors are encouraged to extend their speaking by taking on accents and adding their own flair to their short presentation. 

As this is a celebration of books and reading, no prizes will be presented for costumes. Children are encouraged to bring their books with them as we will have time to share these during the day, along with some of this year’s finalists and previous winners of the Children’s Book Council of Australia competition. 

Also, our fifth school-wide, mixed-aged team Kids’ Lit Quiz will be held on this day. Your children are already excited to be reading quality literature picture book sets at school (mostly from Mrs Middleton’s extensive personal collection this year) and considering what questions they may be asked. 

The International Kids’ Lit Quiz 2024 World Final was won by Indonesia with host Canberra Grammar School’s team placing second and South Africa in third place. Our school often competes in the Australian National finals of Kids’ Lit Quiz so this our annual school Lit Quiz is great practise!
