McKinnon is proud to congratulate two alumni who are prominent at one of the oldest football clubs in Australia, the Melbourne Football Club.
Steven Smith (Class of 1973) is currently President of the Melbourne Football Club and was previously President of the Melbourne Cricket Club. He won the Best and Fairest Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott Memorial Trophy in 1981.
Steven played 203 games and kicked 144 goals for the Melbourne Football Club. He was the first former Little League player to graduate and play senior VFL football. He participated in the very first season of the Little League when it was established in 1967. He later made his senior debut for Melbourne in Round 3, 1974.
Max Gawn (Class of 2009) is Captain of the Melbourne Football Club, a premiership captain, and won his third Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott Memorial Trophy last year.
Both hold incredible positions at the club and are products of the Ormond Football Club. A fantastic reflection of our Thistlelonian community.

MAX GAWN (CLASS OF 2009)
Congratulations to Thistlelonian Max Gawn (Class of 2009), who has created history with his ninth selection in the 2026 AFL All-Australian team.
He has also been named captain of the 2026 All-Australian team for the second time, having previously received the honour in 2021.
What an incredible achievement for an outstanding player and leader for the Melbourne Football Club.

A PIECE OF MCKINNON HISTORY
We are incredibly grateful to Thistlelonian Class of 2009 and Melbourne Football Club captain Max Gawn for generously donating a signed Melbourne Football Club guernsey to McKinnon Secondary College.
Max has gone on to become one of the AFL’s most accomplished and recognisable players, making this a particularly special piece of McKinnon history. To have a signed guernsey donated back to the school while Max is still at the top of his game is something we are incredibly proud to preserve.
The guernsey will be displayed in the MERC in the future, providing our school community and generations of Thistlelonians with a lasting reminder of Max’s journey from McKinnon to the highest level of AFL.
As part of his special donation, the school will make a $500 contribution to Fight MND, supporting the fight against motor neurone disease.
