Grade 6 Students Connect with Boroondara Youth

Our Grade 6 students recently took part in a workshop with Boroondara Youth, learning about the programs, opportunities and support available to young people in our local community.

Boroondara Youth provides a range of programs, services and events for young people who live, work, study or spend time in Boroondara. A highlight of the presentation was learning about the Boroondara Youth Hub, a welcoming space for young people aged 10 - 25 years, located at 360 Burwood Road, Hawthorn (above the Hawthorn Arts Centre).

Students discovered that the Youth Hub offers a variety of activities and opportunities, including:

  • School holiday programs
  • Cooking sessions and creative activities
  • Arts and crafts
  • Leadership events and youth awards
  • Opportunities to have their voice heard through Youth Voice and Youth Parliament
  • Access to a music podcast studio and gallery space for young artists

The Hub also provides a safe place for young people to relax, socialise, work on study, or seek support from youth workers. Facilities include games such as Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, pool and table tennis.

Students particularly enjoyed hearing about Risky, the Youth Hub’s friendly blue-tongued lizard mascot!

During the session, students also shared their ideas and feedback about what they would like to see included in a future Youth Leadership Day. They reflected on the skills they would like to develop this year and the types of activities that would help them grow as leaders.

Families interested in learning more about programs and events for young people can visit the Boroondara Youth website .

Parliamentary Insider Workshop

Our Grade 5/6 students recently participated in an online Parliamentary Insider workshop run by the Parliament of Australia’s Parliamentary Education Office. This 50-minute session explored the function and significance of Australia’s democratic system of government. Students investigated how laws are made through Parliament, the responsibilities of elected representatives, how governments are formed, and the ways government is held accountable. The workshop was a valuable follow-up to our Parliament for a Day incursion in Week 5, helping students deepen their understanding of how Australia’s democracy works.

The Understand section of the Parliamentary Education Office is a great resource to explore as a family and learn more about the role, function, structure and people of the Australian Parliament.
