LIBRARY EVENTS
Alex the Magician at St Stephen Gaudete Library – 25 May, 2026
In celebration of the current cohort of Reservoir students concluding their time at the campus, St Stephen Gaudete Library welcomed Alex the Magician! Previously seen on Australia’s Got Talent, Alex enthralled students and staff with his combination of magic and comedy, and some students were fortunate enough to be chosen to help Alex perform his tricks! All who attended the lunchtime session had a ball, and it was an amazing way to send the students off for the semester!

MEET A LIBRARY STAFF MEMBER! #9
Name: Mrs Bridget Hiho (Teacher/ Faculty Leader of Library Services)
What is the best book you have read recently?
The best book I have read recently is called Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. It’s a cleverly written dystopian novel that questions, if civilisation as we know it was lost, what you preserve and how far would you go to protect it?
What is your favourite genre to read, or to recommend?
That’s difficult to answer as I read from a wide variety of genres, but I usually recommend books that have had an impact on my way of thinking, and I love non-fiction also.
If you could only recommend one book to everyone, what would it be?
The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, as the message that the most important things in life are invisible to the physical eye and can only understood with the heart resonates strongly with me.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not at the Library?
Travelling to new countries, socialising, painting, writing and clothes shopping.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be, and why?
Invisibility - as I thought the idea of an invisibility cloak in Harry Potter was so cool – and I would love to get up close to a snow leopard without detection.
MEET A LIBRARY STAFF MEMBER! #10
Name: Mrs Jeanine Patterson (Library Technician – Overdues Officer)
What is the best book you have read recently? I really loved Mad Mabel by Sally Hepworth and have recently finished Fredrik Backman’s My Friends which I would say is now a favourite too!
What is your favourite genre to read, or to recommend?
My favourite genres are definitely Historical Fiction and Contemporary Issues, but have lately been drawn to the Mystery genre.
If you could only recommend one book to everyone, what would it be?
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I love the back story to TKAM as well (if you want to know it, don’t hesitate to ask me!). Although it was written in 1960, sadly the themes are just as relevant today.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not at the library?
I love doing crosswords, watching movies (though the book is ALWAYS better), listening to music, playing my ukulele and, of course, reading.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be, and why?
I would simply love to be able to read faster…so many books, so little time!
Thank you for keeping up with SMC Libraries!
