Overnewton and VU Tech School Partnership 

Overnewton has been working very closely with the Brimbank Tech School, situated within the VU Sunshine Campus, to offer our students unique STEM opportunities. This week, expressions of interest are open for several exciting initiatives. 

Student Leaders in STEM Forum: 18th August at the Royal Society of Victoria

Five successful students will become founding members of the Tech Schools Victoria Student Leaders in STEM Network. As a founding member student ideas, experiences and feedback will help establish the foundations of the Network and influence opportunities for future STEM leaders. They will meet other like-minded STEM students, connect with scientists, researchers and innovators, develop leadership skills and explore future pathways and opportunities. 

Expressions of interest can be submitted to Ms Mercieca by Monday 27 July.  

Riverthreads: A Living Story 

Year 8 and Year 9 students have been invited to partner with the Tech School and the Maribyrnong River Waterways Association to launch an ambitious citizen science project focused on the Maribyrnong River. The project honours First Nations perspectives, knowledge and storytelling to better understand the river’s past while helping to protect the future of Country. 

As part of the project, students will use drone technology to identify and map invasive species, as well as create recordings that capture the sounds of the river alongside traditional songs, bringing its stories to life. 

This project brings together the past and the future. Drone mapping addresses the limitations of current manual techniques, enabling more effective and timely responses to environmental issues as we work towards making the river "fishable, drinkable and swimmable" once again. At the same time, recording the sounds of the river and traditional songs reconnects students with its rich cultural history, inspiring them to play a role in restoring the river to the vibrant, life-giving waterway it has long been.
