In our Maths sessions, Foundation students have been exploring the properties of familiar 2D shapes. Building on their recognition of these shapes, students have been developing skills for describing shapes using mathematical language. They also discovered that turning or rotating a shape does not change what it is – a triangle is still a triangle, no matter which way it is turned!
Understanding the attributes of shapes has helped students to select appropriate materials for creating shapes. Using playdough, wool, pipecleaners and icypole sticks, students demonstrated their knowledge of curved and straight lines, as well as the number of sides and corners on each shape.
To conclude our Shapes unit, students explored how shapes can be combined to create new shapes, such as putting two triangles together to make a square. They applied their learning by planning, creating and describing their own imaginative shape pictures.
