Over the past two weeeks, we have been busy revising learnt material, assessing what has been taught and we have learnt more new material. Assessing students helps us target what we teach to whom, assisting those students who need extra lessons on taught material and extension lessons for those who need challenging.

In Literacy, we have learnt about 'ar' words such as Art and party. Students have learnt how to read and spell 'ar' words and have written sentences with 'ar' words.

In writing we have been learning about how authors write and why they write the way they do. We learnt how to write a letter to our teachers. This week we learnt about different styles of writing such as writing that persuades us; with a coke box, informs us looking at a recipe and entertains us such as Do Not Open This Book. We also learnt about the moral in a story after reading The Lion and The Mouse. Students loved re-enacting the Dreamtime story Tiddalick in small groups.

In Maths we continued learning how to share items equally, as in division and how to make equal groups, as in multiplication. Students loved using Lego when learning about arrays.

In History we used inspiartion from our Lego Land excursion to design, make and redeasign and remake a structure of choice, as  Ole Kirk Kristiansen in Billund, Denmark did in 1932 as the inventor of Lego.

In Digital Technologies we learnt to take a photo, with permission, label and save it, using iPads.

In Auslan we learnt how to sign the months of the year, the year we were born and how to sign the happy birthday song.

In Respectful Relationships, we learnt about adults we can speak to at school if we need assistance. It was also Anti Billying Week this week. After learning about bullying, we made a poster to place around the school about being kind and not being a bully.

How to help your child in their literacy journey:

Try playing board games together as a family. Games such as Scrabble Junior, Scrabble, Up Words, Sight Word Bingo, Rhyming Snap, magnetic Word Building, Syllable clapping plus roll and read dice games. Letter Sound Treasure Hunt: Search the room for real objects that start with a target letter sound. Most importantly, spend time with your children, having fun together, speaking to each other, listening to each other, reading to each other and writing to each other or family and friends.

Mrs Murphy & Mrs Monson - Grade 1/2

Literacy 📚📚

For the past 3 weeks, students have explored the traditional and alternative fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood, developing their understanding of characters, narrators and different perspectives. They compared familiar stories, explored how authors use language features such as humour, idioms and onomatopoeia, and practised writing compound and expanded sentences. Students also had the opportunity to retell stories from a character’s point of view, developing their creativity and confidence as writers.

Maths ➕➖🟰

Over the last 2 weeks, we have been looking at Money. Students have been skip counting by $2 coins, $5 and $10 notes. Students have been adding money together and taking money away.

Students have also been working out worded problems. E.g. If I went to the shop and bought some new books 📚📚 which cost $15.50, and I gave a $20 note, how much change should I get?
