Celebrating Indigenous Culture

Indigenous Day

On Monday, 27th July, Pakenham Secondary College celebrated Indigenous Day, providing students with a meaningful opportunity to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture through a range of engaging activities and experiences.

Throughout the day, teachers presented a mini lesson in classrooms, encouraging students to deepen their understanding of Australia's First Nations peoples and the importance of culture and connection.

Students explored Indigenous artefacts, listened to storytelling, learnt about traditional Indigenous art and the meaning behind its symbols, created beautiful watercolour postcards inspired by traditional Indigenous symbols and enjoyed freshly made damper prepared using traditional ingredients.

Our Koorie students also participated in the Monash University 'Hand on Health' program, a one-hour Health and Wellbeing Workshop designed to support Koorie students through practical strategies that promote wellbeing, cultural strength and personal development.

We sincerely thank Monash University, our Koorie Engagement Support Officer, Peter Dye, and our Indigenous Artist in Residence, Sam Richards, for generously sharing their time, knowledge and culture with our students. 

We also extend our thanks to Ms Rendall, Ms Macintosh and the PACT class for preparing the delicious damper, Ms Schinzig for guiding students through the art activity, and Ms Tran for organising such an engaging and memorable day for our College community.

NAIDOC Week

Throughout Week One of Term 3, Pakenham Secondary College proudly celebrated NAIDOC Week, recognising the rich cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Students took part in a range of activities organised by our Student Representative Council, including an Indigenous Art Club, a school-wide educational lesson, a First Nations Music Showcase and a popular Damper Day, where students enjoyed this traditional favourite.

These activities provided valuable opportunities for students to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, reflect on the significance of NAIDOC Week and celebrate the world's oldest continuing living cultures.

We thank our Student Representative Council and the staff who supported our NAIDOC Week celebrations, helping to create meaningful learning experiences for our students.
