Big Thinking for Little Learners: Introducing our new Discovery Time process.
Our new Discovery Time process in Grade 1/2 is designed to help students become curious, creative and independent learners. The process follows five clear steps: Ideas, Draw, Plan, Do and Reflect. Students begin by brainstorming and sharing their ideas through discussion, they then create labelled drawings to show their thinking before moving into planning, where they consider important questions such as what they are making, why it is important, who it is for and how they will complete it. This helps students learn how to organise their thoughts and set clear goals.
During the “Do” stage, students create, build, research and problem-solve using hands-on materials and technology equipments. Finally, they take time to reflect on their learning — sharing what they enjoyed, what they learned, what they are proud of and what they might improve next time. This reflection step encourages students to develop confidence, resilience and a growth mindset. Like always, Discovery Time supports creativity while also building important skills in communication, critical thinking and self-management.
The Best Part of Me: A Gratitude Reflection
As part of our wellbeing learning, our Grade 1/2 students recently participated in a special Gratitude Lesson focused on appreciating themselves. Students reflected on the question: What is the best part of me, and why am I grateful for it? They thought carefully about their unique qualities — such as their strong legs for running and dancing, their hands for creating and playing, or their brains for thinking and learning. Through drawing and writing, students celebrated what makes them special and recognised how their bodies and abilities help them every day. This meaningful activity encouraged positive self-talk, confidence and an understanding that we are all unique and worthy of appreciation.
